Small Site Metric (SSM)
The biodiversity metric used depends on your development’s size and type. The Small Site Metric (SSM) applies to ‘small sites,’ including 1 to 9 houses on land up to 1 hectare, or under 0.5 hectares if the number of houses is unknown. It also covers commercial buildings under 1,000 square meters or on land smaller than 1 hectare. The SSM doesn’t require a qualified ecologist but does require a competent person who has the knowledge and skills to perform specified tasks to complete and review the biodiversity metric.
Essential Documents for Submission
The tool streamlines the process by generating all the key documents needed for submission to the Local Planning Authority. You’ll receive a completed Small Site Metric, detailing the biodiversity value of your site and any impacts from development.
In addition, the tool provides a Biodiversity Gain Plan, outlining how your project will achieve net biodiversity gain. This includes baseline habitat assessments and post-development projections, ensuring a clear comparison of the site’s ecological state before and after development.
